Paulien Oltheten is a visual artist. Her field of activity is in the public domain. She photographs, films and provides commentary where necessary through texts, drawings or live presentations. She mainly focuses on the physical aspect, the daily rituals and routines of people and things: how they stand, hang around, waver, lean on, hold up, push and pull in the world around them. Like a contemporary urban anthropologist, she documents such types of behavior and patterns, often in subtle relation to a specifically chosen location or context.

She studied at the Academy of Arts and Design in ’s-Hertogenbosch (2000-2004) and the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam (2005-2006). Past residencies include ISCP New York (2013) and Cité internationale des arts in Paris (2017).
